Five of Cups | The Regret

When the Five of Cups appears, it usually indicates that one is living with a regret. There is something that you regret either doing or not doing. You are overcome with a sense of sadness about a past relationship which did not work out. Since this is a cups card, this regret specifically relates to your family. Either you were the one hurt or you were the one who did the hurting.

You may be consumed by remorse and regret. You have, quite possibly, made some severe mistakes in your past relationship. Due to this, one has lost a loved one and for some reason, that person no longer wants us back. If this sounds like you, you will need to resolve these feelings.

If you were abandoned for someone else, try to understand what may have resulted in such a scenario occurring. It is up to you whether you would like to stay or leave a person who has betrayed you in the past. Neither decision will be easy, but at the end of the day, do not only think of yourself when making that decision. Know that regardless of how you may feel, you do have a responsibility to fulfil to your loved ones.

At the same time, remember that you are not obligated to live with abuse or neglect. If there’s someone in your life that has been abusive or neglectful towards you, you are well within your rights to seek a more fulfilling relationship. At the same time, you should bear in mind that many people will choose to stay regardless of how abusive the situation is.

CONFLICT

I’ve felt that this card often comes up when there are issues surrounding inheritance that can lead to jealousy and bickering (see Five of Swords) amongst siblings. If you are not careful and if you continue to engage in such a conflict, these issues can be passed down to the next generation.

If you end up repeating the mistakes that your own ancestors made, you may realise, in the end, that you are even worse than the person who hurt you. Don’t let that happen to you. SAY NO to your demons. Remember that what they did is their responsibility and how you decide to pivot towards or away from that is your choice.

What will you choose, then? For some of us, it may be very difficult to come to terms with the terrible legacy that they (our ancestors) have left us. If so, try to use it as fuel to do better next time. Even if your efforts fall terribly short, you will have taken a few steps towards resolution and sooner or later, you will be able to start something you never even thought possible.

It is time to let go of things in your personal and family history. Some people become unwilling to move on because they are mired in the past. Due to this, this individual is losing out on future opportunities. If you have undergone a trauma that resulted in melancholy, isolation and sorrow; know that if you stay in this state, your past will, indeed, become your future.

RELEASE

The Five of Cups is not all doom and gloom, though. It can, in many cases, represent getting back on your feet and moving forward. I’ve found that this card often comes up when there is a business legacy involved. One has suffered an emotional loss because they were left out in the cold.

Release and recovery is, indeed, an option when the Five of Cups appears. If you have suffered redundancy, loss of employment or even business failure, the time has come to recuperate from these losses. These setbacks could even help you to land a more suitable future opportunity.

In such a scenario, it can represent that one is willing to take the steps to start a completely new venture. You may even find that you are able to recoup some of your losses and even salvage the better parts of the business. The Five of Cups also indicates that the opportunities to improve our finances is on the horizon. If you have undergone a long period of bereavement, know that better days do lay ahead.

It is time to wipe those tears off your face and move on. It will not happen overnight and it will take time. But if you take even one small step towards your own gain, you will realise that what is to come will be far greater than what you left behind.
