The Judgement Tarot Archetype | The Second Chance

When the Judgement card appears, it comes to remind you not to squander away any second chance you are receiving. After all, who knows when this opportunity to ‘set things right’ will appear again? Whenever the judgment card appears, we can expect the truth to come to light, especially if we have been in the dark about something for a long time.

When the Judgment Archetype becomes strong, it reminds us that we can now either continue an old chapter or choose to move forward in a whole new direction.

The Ugly Truth

As a Major Arcana card, Judgement usually speaks of a significant phase or period in our life when all is laid bare in front of us and we are forced–whether we like it or not–to confront the ugly truth of it all. It is seeing and confronting this painful truth that will allow us to put it behind us once and for all.

Do you realise that there are no completely passive players when it comes to life? This card is not so much about absolution, but about facing what we have done and what we have failed to do.

The Judgment card does, indeed, carry connotations of death and resurrection. Something you once thought to be dead can resurface out of nowhere; issues that you once put behind you can rear its ugly head; all of this and so much more can begin to appear out of the blue when the Judgement Archetype becomes strong in one’s life.

First things first, you have to ask yourself: why am I being given this second chance? Will I really do things differently this time or will I fall into old traps? When the judgement card appears, it reminds you that you do not have all the answers. You didn’t the first time around and you still don’t this time around. The real question is not is this the second time, but is this the third, fourth and fifth time? If you have given the same person, the same institution and the same organisation more chances than is necessitated or warranted: you have to ask yourself if you are willing to be let down again…

The Judgment card appears to let us know that we have to be responsible for the choices that we make. If you have made poor choices in the past, this card reminds you to try again and see if you can set things right. You may not be able to, but at least you know you tried.

Some people have a hard time owning up to their shortcomings and failures. If this sounds like you, it is time to clear the air once and for all. Do not incessantly rehash past events as many of the people around you may be ‘over it’ and not interested in hearing about it anymore. If there has, indeed, been a death; the Judgment Archetype can warn you to let sleeping dogs lie and not resurrect any old issues.

The Trumpet

While honesty and clear communication is important in maintaining a relationship, know that being overtly harsh or loud with another individual could lead to that person not wanting to have a relationship with you regardless of what you have done (or not done) for them. I’ve found that when the Judgement Archetype becomes strong in one’s life, a permanent or long-term separation is on the horizon. Sometimes it is, indeed, better to remain silent than to try and talk it out.

Judgement can indicate that you have a tendency to speak your mind and judge people too harshly without taking into account the various factors at play. Do you think that you are right? Do others actually even see things the way that you see it? Do not try to impose your view on others as it can lead to alienation, isolation and in some cases, even retaliation.

Be careful not to allocate and attribute blame or accusations at each other during arguments. At most, this will provoke a reaction that could damage a relationship more than what you meant to. You need to forgive past mistakes if you want to move forward–be it with or without the relationship that had caused you pain, heartache and grief. You may find that others are judging you in a way that is unwarranted when the Judgment card appears. The best thing you can do in this scenario is to rise above it all. It really is their own issue and it is not yours.

Long-distance relationships or a relationship that was once close becoming very distant is definitely on the cards when the Judgment Archetype becomes strong in one’s life. If you want to continue or discontinue a relationship, be mindful of how you choose to end or continue things. Remaining close when there is a long-distance relationship involved is a big challenge so ask yourself if it’s really possible to be in an intimate relationship with someone if they live far away from you.

Sometimes, it’s really best to let bygones be bygones and move forward with your life. If the past really does reappear and resurrect itself, know that you have it in you to put it behind you and seek a new beginning… elsewhere.

May peace be with you.
