The Two of Swords | Wait, Wait, Wait…

The Two of Swords is the card of delaying difficult choices. It represents that yes, we, indeed, have a difficult choice to make–and we already know the choice that we must make–but, for some reason, we are delaying it as much as possible. We are delaying it because we think, for some bizarre reason, that ‘something’ will happen in the interim. As to what that ‘something’ is, your guess is as good as mine.

The imagery of the card–that of a blindfolded woman–harks back to the Justice Archetype. The truth is, we can’t just make the decision based on gut instinct alone. Imagine if a judge were to make a decision based on his own biases without taking the adequate time to collect and assess the facts.

That wouldn’t be fair, would it?

When the Two of Swords appears, it indicates that we need to delay the decision as we have no choice but to gather all the facts, do adequate research and most importantly, arrive at the best possible decision based on all of the information we have managed to gather. Even though we may have a gut instinct about the matter, perhaps our reasoning is flawed, or more likely, we are leaning too heavily into our own biases to make a reasonable conclusion. The last thing any of us would ever want is to be accused of being prejudiced. Unless, of course, you feel that you are justified in being prejudiced.

The Two of Swords appears to remind us that if we are discerning enough to wait, we will be able to make that difficult decision, but only after having done adequate fact-finding. On the other hand, if we rush into making that decision, we may look back with regret, as given time, new information will undoubtedly surface. Regardless of how we arrive at that decision, the Two of Swords represents that it is, indeed, YOUR CALL. It is your decision to make. This may make the people around you feel insecure about their standing with you. Or perhaps, it is the other way around. You are waiting on someone to make a decision about you.

The Two of Swords appears to remind us that we should always make the decision that feels most authentic to us. Most of the time, the decision that we ultimately make–after the delay–may not change from our gut instinct, but by gathering the knowledge and information necessary, we are broadening our perspective and taking into account vital information which will help us in the long-run. This allows us to see the world beyond our own perspective and beyond black-and-white. Perhaps there is some value in taking the time to assess the situation properly before coming to a judgment and conclusion, that while valid, is not an authentic one.

The truth is: mental clarity is required to make a good and sound decision. When the Two of Swords appears, it is not asking you to wait for weeks or even for months. But it is asking you to wait for a few hours and to wait for a few days. That much time is definitely necessary before you make a decision that you possibly cannot alter once you have made it. When the Two of Swords appears, it indicates that the right decision will, indeed, manifest; but arriving at that decision may take longer than you expected. At the same time, once it is time, do not delay and be quick in execution.

After all, we can only wait so long before it is time to move on to the next thing.
