The Knight of Pentacles is an archetype that we rarely see in the modern world. They existed when we lived in a world where change was not as rapid as it is now. They are a relic, perhaps, of a bygone era. It goes without saying that due to the strides which we have made in technology, the pace of our life is faster than ever. We have forgotten how long it takes for a tree to grow. Most of us never even bother planting a tree if we realise that our harvest is some ten years away. This is the problem that the Knight of Pentacles faces in our modern world. He is simply not equipped to deal with change in the way that the other knights are.
Fire will move on; air will move on and even water will move on… But not the earth types. They will still be there after everyone is long gone. We may even look at them and wonder, “Why are you still here? Did you not hear that ‘the rest of the world’ has moved on?” These Knight of Pentacles types will resist all attempts at change. It is hard-wired into their way of being. These are the types to whom innovation–even if it is the good kind–is a threat. They will do all that it takes to keep change away for they think that that’s a good way to respond to innovation.

If you have a Knight of Pentacles in your life, be warned. They will stick to convention and to the status quo no matter what. Conservatism is a keyword when it comes to pentacles people and this Knight is no different. That’s why stagnation is a watchword when it comes to the Knight of Pentacles. He will not be doing anything or going anywhere in his life. He will not be taking risks and nor will he seize the opportunities which are presented to him. In fact, he will be waiting there, in the shadows, ever-ready to tell you why your life is not going to work out. But he will, of course, never take a look at his own life.
The Knight of Pentacles represents a person who we, through our modern eyes, consider lacking motivation to achieve anything of value with their lives. In some situations, it can represent someone who lacks even the energy to rise from bed. He has grown disinterested in life and in living. Why? The answer is simple. In a world that is consistently changing, he would rather stay as he is. Since the Knight is an earth energy, some level of inertia will be present in his personality.
This Knight, contrary to popular belief, often lacks focus and concentration. What may appear to be a commitment is only a fear of change. This, in turn, prevents him from fully committing to any task or project. Part of the reason why people end up being this way is due to a perfectionist streak. Nothing is ever good enough for them. Pentacles people are not to be trusted. They will stick to their guns no matter what and will not listen to reason.
If it was up to them, we’d all still be rowing boats and airplanes would never have been invented…
