The significance of the 6 of Cups cannot be seen, but it can be felt. Have you ever walked around an old neighbourhood where you used to live? It is that feeling of deja vu. A sense that you are returning to a place with which you share an emotional bond. This emotional tie is most likely a very strong one and it is one that will stay with you for the rest of your life. Even when you do manage to distance yourself from it, it will still somehow have a gravitational pull over you.
The Six of Cups appears when it is either time to emotionally move on from something or when it’s time to return to something we once put behind us. Either scenario is possible when this card appears. It is all contextual and circumstantial. Look at the surrounding cards for more information.
Sometimes, this card indicates that one will get back or receive something that one lost, either due to childish naivety or due to the foolish mistakes that we made due to our youth. It is a fixable problem as it most likely arose due to a general lack of knowledge or inexperience. There is a reason why young people feature prominently in the card. In our naivety we make many mistakes which we do not realise in the moment, but with the wisdom of hindsight it becomes all too clear.

I’ve personally found that the Six of Cups can appear when someone you once knew a while back–perhaps even in another lifetime–returns to your life seemingly out of the blue. It can, in some cases, even indicate that a spouse from a past life is destined to return into your life. At the same time, be cautious for if your troubles in prior relationships stemmed due to your own immaturity, it is unlikely that you will be able to put the past behind you unless you have actually put the past behind you.
When this card appears, it can sometimes indicate unresolved ‘Mother issues’. Perhaps our mothers loved us adequately and perhaps they didn’t. Perhaps they smothered us or perhaps they preferred another sibling to us. This card can appear when we are being cautioned not to allow Mother issues to rear their ugly head, especially if these issues have been unresolved or pending for sometime. I’ve found that this card often shows up when a querent has had an abortion or even put up a child for adoption. Yes, these are painful things to talk about but people make such decisions all the time. Motherhood is a challenging journey.
At the same time, the Six of Cups–which clearly shows benefaction–like all the other Sixes, signifies that we will finally receive the emotional connection that we are longing for. There is someone, could be male or female, who is going to feel like home. This is not necessarily a card of material benefits, but rather, one of emotional nurturance. It reminds us that no matter who we are, we all deserve to be loved.
But we don’t always receive that. Sometimes, we have lost a parent due to death or even imprisonment. This could mean that we don’t get the affection that we need. Somehow, though, there is a way that the universe will try to replenish what we didn’t receive. When the Six of Cups appears, remember that every child of the universe is deserving and worthy of love.
And who knows? Perhaps that love is right around the corner…
