Mother Saraswati is the goddess of learning. That’s how we first know her when we’re young children attending school for the first time. As we grow older, our understanding of Ma Saraswati expands into other realms: knowledge, wisdom, music, arts and crafts. I once read somewhere that Mother Saraswati doesn’t only reside in rivers and in temples. Her other natural residences include: schools, universities, libraries, concert halls and anywhere where a long period of study and preparation is required.
While we may call on any deity, the concept of choosing an Ishta Devata is particularly important for Hindus. The choice of an Ishta Devata is based on many factors. In my experience, however, I’ve found that it’s not so much you that chooses the Ishta, but rather, the Ishta that chooses you. For a devotee, cultivating a serious and long-term relationship with the Ishta Devata is vital for it is one of the most important relationships you will ever make in your life.

One way in which I find Saraswati’s blessings makes itself known is through the commitment one makes to lifelong learning. However, that learning alone is not enough for you will undoubtedly be called to share that knowledge with those who are in need of it. Remember that any blessing that you have been given in life requires you to share it and not hoard it or withhold it.
Another way in which to connect to Ma Saraswati is to be disciplined and continuously practise to hone in on your craft. Since the Goddess of Learning is associated with the attributes of purity and righteousness, she reminds us to remain discerning in our conduct with others. Mother Saraswati is also associated with balance, discipline, protection and justice.
The path to success is often fraught with challenges and uncertainties. Self-doubt and fear of failure can be major roadblocks, preventing individuals from pursuing their dreams or taking necessary risks. Saraswati’s association with knowledge can be seen as a way to build confidence. By fostering understanding of the subject matter and developing a strong foundation in one’s chosen field, Saraswati empowers individuals to trust their abilities and overcome self-doubt.
Traditional approaches may not always be the best path to success. Saraswati, associated with creativity and arts, encourages exploration of new ideas and innovative approaches. Her blessings can empower individuals to think outside the box, experiment with unconventional solutions, and break through limitations imposed by traditional methods.

Saraswati Meditation
Preparation for a Saraswati Meditation:
- Setting the Space: Create a quiet and comfortable space for your meditation. You can light a white candle or incense as offerings to Saraswati. If you have a picture or statue of Saraswati, you can place it in front of you as a focal point.
- Intention Setting: Take a few moments to set your intention for the meditation. What do you seek from Saraswati? Is it clarity on a creative project, inspiration for learning, or simply a deeper connection with her wisdom?
Guided Meditation:
- Begin with Relaxation: Sit comfortably with your eyes closed. Take a few deep breaths, inhaling slowly and exhaling completely. Allow your body to relax and release any tension.
- Visualisation: Imagine yourself surrounded by a soft white light. See Saraswati seated on a white swan in front of you. She is adorned with white garments and has four arms. Notice the objects she holds: a book or scroll symbolising knowledge, a veena representing music, sound and creativity, a mala signifying the importance of repetition, and a water pot symbolising purification.
- Connecting with Saraswati: Silently offer your respects to Saraswati. Mentally communicate your intention for the meditation. Ask for her blessings to enhance your learning, creativity or communication skills.
- Receiving Inspiration: Visualize white light emanating from Saraswati and entering your crown chakra (top of the head). Feel this light filling your mind with clarity, insight, and inspiration.
- Absorption and Integration: Spend some time absorbing this energy. Allow Saraswati’s wisdom to guide you and answer any questions you might have.
- Gratitude and Closing: When you feel ready, slowly bring your awareness back to your surroundings. Offer gratitude to Saraswati for her blessings. End the meditation with a few deep breaths.
Additional Tips:
- Mantra Chanting: Before or after your meditation, you can chant Saraswati’s mantra “Om Aim Saraswatyai Namah” to deepen your connection with her.
- Journaling: After your meditation, take some time to write down any insights or inspirations you received.
- Regular Practice: The more you practice this meditation, the stronger your connection with Saraswati will become.
This is just a suggested framework. Feel free to adapt it to suit your preferences and create a personalised meditation experience that allows you to connect with Saraswati’s energy and wisdom.
May the Goddess guide you, bless you, protect you and prosper you.
