If you possess, in the depths of your heart, great sympathy for the plight of others, you may sometimes end up staying in situations that are detrimental for your well-being. If this sounds like you, my advise would be to set some healthy boundaries. And believe me when I say this, unlike the Page, Knight or even the King, the Queen of Cups is excellent at setting boundaries.
What may, at first glance, come across as a sweet and caring individual, is actually a powerhouse of emotional self-mastery. They have learnt, over a long period of time, how to shut and even seal off parts of themselves that need to be protected if the influence around them is particularly negative.
The Queen of Cups knows that she can only ever take care of others if she learns to take care of herself first. While selfishness is not a trait that is usually ascribed to the Queen of Cups, it is one that I would not find altogether absent in her, either. While she is not necessary a career woman (see Queen of Swords), you will find that she excels and is excellent at all she ever does.
The reason is simple: her strength comes from learning to say NO… and meaning it!

DISCRIMINATION
The Queen of Cups relies on her sense of discrimination to guide her in the world. She is a natural empath. Her energy, however, is not nearly as strong or as focused as the High Priestess. Not yet, anyway. If she does, indeed, choose to focus on how to best develop her natural gift and abilities, she will get there. But the time is not yet. There is still a while–2-3 years of dedicated practised and education–to go before one can make the transition from the Queen of Cups to the High Priestess. But once that transition is made, her sense of discrimination is destined to grow even stronger.
The Queen of Cups’ throne is by the water. The ornate cup she holds in her hand is closed. This indicates that the Queen is in dire need of shutting off a part of herself so that she can develop other parts of herself. Sometimes, we leave ourselves open to getting hurt because we have difficulty in setting the boundaries that we need to. The element of water, in particular, is boundless. It is hard to truly tame and control water. The best we can hope to do is to dam it. Yet, this, too, is a temporary solution.
The Queen of Cups represents that we must learn to direct the flow of our energy and not allow it to flow in the wrong direction. Generally speaking, the Queen of Cups is a reserved and timid individual. As such, she must be treated with utmost care. If you are in a relationship with the Queen of Cups archetype, make sure you take care of her as at the end of the day–if you have energetically drained this person–there will be karmic consequences later on.
As a spouse, the Queen of Cups will be both devoted and loyal. Due to this, she may be susceptible to friendships with folks who are overtly dependent, clingy and who do not understand the meaning of NO. Providing emotional support to others means that we will end up needing support ourselves. The Queen of Cups, as an expert in saying NO, will tend to say ‘NO’ more than she does ‘YES’. She may have only a few good high quality friends and she is usually content with that.

SORROW
The Queen of Cups represents an individual that is highly sensitive and extremely emotional. This is a person who is also remarkably talented and creative. Even if they are a reserved individual, they will generally have no lack of friends and admirers due to their pleasant and pleasing disposition. They may, however, get stressed and frustrated if they are surrounded by people who are cruel and cold. They, themselves, will require a spouse who is compassionate and caring for them to function at their full capacity.
Of all the emotions, the Queen of Cups is usually drawn to someone who has experienced a great deal of sorrow in their lives. She has the ability to heal you, but you must be willing to do your work, as well. I’ve found that if the Queen of Cups shows up on your doorstep, it usually indicates that you have been given an opportunity to turn your life around and set things right. Nevertheless, they will not stick around if they come to see that you are digging yourself deeper and deeper into a pit. If you have succumbed to the dark side of life, the Queen of Cups will know about your past instantly. Do not try to hide things from this Queen for she will figure it all out.
As a partner, the Queen of Cups represents someone who is both compassionate and caring. Always attuned to the feelings of their loved ones, they will do their utmost best for people that they care about. Due to their tendency towards introspection, they understand their inner self and possess a natural ability to understand the unspoken aspects of life. You do not always have to tell them for them to know.
Due to the Queen of Cups’ sweet, loving and sensitive nature, she understands human emotion and the influence that these emotions naturally have on the mind. Her love includes and embraces everyone and everything. At the same time, due to the symbolism of the closed cup, she may close herself off if she is stuck with a partner that does not, in return, show her some level of empathy and kindness. In the event that she does experience coldness, meanness and cruelty from someone, she may shut off and it may be very difficult to get this person to open up again.
All in all, the Queen of Cups represents someone who is resilient and who knows how to take the steps to protect herself. Not only is she very protective over her loved ones, she can be equally self-protective over herself…

CAREER
When you get the Queen of Cups in a career reading, the general advise is: SAY NO. The Queen of Cups is an expert at saying NO to people, opportunities and even customers that may not serve her highest good. As I mentioned earlier, this Queen is an expert at setting boundaries and maintaining them. She knows that the power of NO is necessary for one’s self-preservation.
Financial uncertainty is usually a cause of concern for many people. When the Queen of Cups appears, it may indicate that we should not–or perhaps should no longer–expose ourself to the risk of unnecessary expenses. Where we spend our time and our energy undoubtedly has a big impact on our overall well-being, be it financial or otherwise.
While the Queen of Cups is a sensitive soul, she is also a very resilient individual. She knows when to open herself up and when to shut herself off. Due to this, her ability to discriminate is particularly strong. When this Queen appears, be mindful to release and let go of all your bad habits, thoughts and even prejudices.
You have some serious growing up to do… and with the wisdom of her guidance, you will arrive upon the other side of the shore.
