I’m in love with you… I love you… Uttering these words, especially in a modern context, is a big milestone in any relationship. Who will say it first? Will the other party reciprocate? Will my love go unrequited or will the one I love love me back? If you’ve ever loved someone who did not love you back, you know that there are few experiences as painful as unrequited love.
When it comes to the Lovers card, we are called to ask our highest self: who is the right person for me? The best thing to do would be not to decide for yourself, but rather, allow God to send you someone who will cherish you and the love that you are longing to express. Perhaps you have already been in many relationships and none of them have worked out. You should probably wait for the right time as much as you should for the right person.
The person you are truly destined to be with is someone who will find it in themselves to be with you… till they have no choice but to be alone again.

Karmic Relationship
When the Lovers card appears, it generally represents that you and your partner will share a deep spiritual, emotional, mental and physical bond. You may or may not experience such a relationship in your lifetime. After all, some people never marry at all. Others do marry but for some reason are unable to have the married life that they want.
Many people are in unhappy marriages and the reality is that it is probably a karmic relationship as opposed to a true love bond. If the relationship is a karmic one, then, it will end naturally when the karma between the two parties has been worked out. Till then, you can expect the relationship to continue. Karmic relationships may not be wholly unhappy, but there is always the nagging sense that there is something better out there.
While the relationships associated with the Lovers card are usually romantic in nature, the truth is that this magnetic attraction that we feel towards someone may have its roots in a past life relationship that was never properly resolved. If so, allow the relationship to resolve itself before you move on definitively.
ETHICAL CHOICE
The potential for a sexual union is strong when the Lovers card appears. But whether or not it is able to flourish depends on the emotional and mental state of the parties involved.
In some situations, one partner may not experience the same level of lust as the other partner. In that scenario, an open relationship is possible, but only if all parties consent to it. A great deal of emotional sensitivity and maturity is required for such an arrangement to work. Polygamous relationships were the norm in many societies for a long time and it is still a possibility in many cultures. Care, however, must be taken not to play favourites and so on as the destructive power of a relationship may also come to the fore.
The Lovers card represents that we have a choice to make: especially with regards to our morals and our ethics. If we’re married and we find ourselves developing feelings for someone outside of the marriage, ask yourself if you are willing to pursue it given the risks involved.
If you have children, they may come to resent you and become estranged from you, especially if they disagree with your choices. They may value fidelity and faithfulness more than sense gratification and you will, indeed, come to regret the decision you made if you have jeopardised your family for the sake of your own sense gratification. Ask yourself if putting yourself first is worth it. It may not be.
Sometimes, the Lovers card has nothing to do with love at all. It could indicate one landing their dream job, their dream boss, their dream colleague and so on. Whatever the scenario may be, there is a sense that this is destined, fated and will last for a long time to come.

ENDINGS
The Lovers card can foretell that the time has come to bring some long-standing relationships to an end. Perhaps your values have changed and the two of you are no longer in alignment with one another. In situations such as these, it is best to try and part amicably, continuing to respect the other person and what you have shared. There is no need to end on a bad note and it is not in your self-interest to lash out at the other person. If you cannot control your anger, you will find it hard to be in a healthy relationship.
In a situation where the split is not amicable, it is usually because one party could not get their needs met. There’s usually one person doing the leaving and one person (plus kids, in some cases) getting left behind. In situations such as this, ask yourself if it is worth it to stay invested in a relationship where you’re just not happy with the other person.
They may cherish you, but you may not cherish them. This sort of one-sided attraction is doomed to fail, so let it go before things get even worse. Speaking of one-sided attraction, ask yourself why you were attracted to the person that you felt attracted to. Perhaps you have some insecurity within you and by being with a confident person, you felt you could ‘use’ them to feel better about yourself.
But the truth is, you will only end up draining that person so it’s best to let go. If you do end up draining another person, know that the responsibility is on you to stop taking. Do not take more than you need and the Universe will reward you with abundance.

COMMITMENT
Pure love must begin with both parties making a commitment. A commitment is a basic necessity for a relationship to work. With time, sacrifice and patience, it will grow fruitful and be a source of nourishment for countless generations. Whenever you start a relationship, know that it ceases to be about ‘me’ and becomes about ‘us’.
If you are already in a committed relationship, the Lovers card indicates that your relationship with your current partner will continue to deepen. Perhaps you have gone through some difficult times and instead of tearing your relationship apart, it only served to bring you closer together. Not all relationships fall apart when pressure is put on them. If, however, you have, indeed, felt the strain of recent hardships, resolve to put it behind you and move forward into the future courageously.
The Lovers can also indicate a commercial collaboration and a business relationship between two people that is destined to last for a long time. It is possible that the two of you met through work and your venture will be a profitable one. A caveat: there are plenty of people who work well together professionally and may not gel at all on a personal level. If that is the case, learn to keep the two separate so that you can still make the most of your relationship.
The Lovers card can represent a platonic relationship that becomes a romantic relationship over time. Love at first sight may be on the cards for one of the parties involved. It may, however, be sometime before the other party begins to reciprocate and open up. It could be the case that there are carrying some trauma from a previous marriage or long-term bond and will need time to trust again.
If you are with a partner who has had an abusive spouse or parent, the way you choose to respond to it could either make or break the relationship. If you are personally unable to support them, find them some external help. It will show that you still care and are willing to do what it takes to make the relationship work. If your partner is unable to accept the assistance being offered, it usually shows that they have no vested interest in solving their issue. If this is the case, ask yourself if you want to continue being with a partner who is unable to move on.
The Lovers card can also show up when you have two possible partners on the horizon. You may love them both, but in the end, it is best to choose one. You will know which one to choose based on the counsel of your Inner Voice.
Sometimes, we can, indeed, get cold feet before a big change. If you feel like running away from a commitment, ask God for advise and guidance. If you feel unable to make a big commitment, you can always commit for a certain period of time and see if it works for you. If you still feel like running away at the end of it, know that it was never the right decision for you in the first place.
When the Lovers card appears, be prepared to make a commitment and a choice… and stick to it for a long time to come.
