There’s a huge difference between gambling and making an investment. Gambling is playing with luck in the hope that things will turn out in your favour. Making an investment is pouring resources into someone or something with the expectation that it will generate a return based on the information you presently have. But some investments we make inevitably end up generating losses. So what do we do?
Thanks to the sharing economy, there are a plethora of options for you to choose from when you’re deciding to hire freelancers. In fact, there are so many options that it can be overwhelming for the debut author to know where to start. This was my journey.
They say never judge a book by its cover, but we all do. And in this age of social media mayhem, you better take the design of your book cover seriously. Amazon and other websites do offer DIY book covers, but I personally don’t recommend it. It’s too big of a risk to do a shoddy job on something so important.
So, you’ve finished writing your novel. Now what? Perhaps you ask your friends and family to read it. And there’s nothing wrong that. But if your friends are anything like mine, they’re probably not professionals. Some of them may not even read, let alone read for pleasure. Whilst they may have some valuable feedback, I have now come to believe that they should never be the ones you look to for advice. So where does one go?
We live in a world where people have mastered the art of managing impressions. There’s fake news everywhere. Fake followers. Fake lives. Fake well… everything. The filters and perfected poses make our lives look better than they really are. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry at some of the things I encounter on social media.
For sometime now, there’s been a gentle voice inside me that’s been urging me on to go forth on my venture wholeheartedly. I heard it. Believe me, I did. But like many people, I was caught up in a life that didn’t fully fulfil me. It wasn’t good enough to stay or bad enough to leave. And then crisis came down on me. Not once, not twice, but over and over again. It emptied out my life and burnt everything to the ground.
The lessons of success and failure remain timeless. I understand now that both failure and success are temporary. If you fail, you shouldn’t hide in your room with a bottle of whiskey because life always shows up with second chances and third chances. If you succeed, you should remain humble and plan for rainy days because who knows what’s around the corner?
