I’m thankful to have a team. They keep things in check. They see my blind spots. They nudge me gently when I am going off-course. Sometimes they even come down on me hard when I am unable to pinpoint my own personal weaknesses. One thing I will say is that a startup team must consist of leaders–no matter who the founder is.
In the darkness of being abandoned, I found my way. Freed from the shackles of being second-in-command, I became the leader of my own life. And for a long time, that was enough. Till the day came when I found myself with a second-in-command.
The spirit that resides in this body longs to create. It draws its inspiration from an unseen hand that pervades the universe.
The idea of democracy as a form of government first appeared in ancient Greece in the city-state of Athens during classical antiquity. The word democracy comes from the Greek demos ‘common people’ and kratos ‘strength’. It is a system where people get to choose their leaders. This is in contrast to other forms of government like monarchy, oligarchy or aristocracy.
As the Editor-in-Chief of Mith Books, I lead a team of writers. I’ve now had the opportunity to work with, meet and interview creatives from all fields — artists, musicians, and even dancers. Despite the choice of art form, we are all on the same journey. With each interview I conduct and with each article I edit, I discover one universal truth about ‘us’ over and over again.
Minorities all over the world are trapped in a dichotomy. On one hand, you are visible, because you are different. On the other hand, you are invisible, because your perspective doesn’t align or even matter to people who aren’t different. When we say who we truly are and what we feel–we make people feel uncomfortable.
As startup founder, I believe the most important thing is having a team that loves to learn. Startups begin with a spark — an idea, a belief, a vision. They spring into existence to do something that not many other companies are doing. No matter how great your business idea may be, you won’t get very far if you don’t have the right people to turn your ideas into reality.
Apprentice-style learn-by-doing is a trademark of Gujarati businesses. I had learnt under a master from the day I emerged from the womb. Business school felt trivial and theoretical in comparison. During my first year, I gave my lecturers a hard time by misbehaving and sleeping in class. My good grades came as a surprise to them. Who needs school when life is our best teacher?
